Lower Peover WI – January 2018

March 8th, 2018 | Posted by Liz McGrath in WI News

The members met together for the first meeting of 2018 in Lower Peover School at 7.30pm. Meetings are normally held on the first Wednesday of the month, but this meeting was held a week later to avoid the proximity to New Year.
We enjoyed an informative talk on “The Royal Cheshire County Show” given by one of our members – Edwina Oldham. Edwina has extensive knowledge and experience derived from 40 years of volunteering in various roles on Cheshire Show Committees. Her talk covered the journey of the Show from its original site in Chester to its current permanent show ground in Tabley, and details of how the show gets organised each year. We were amazed to hear that the Show only has one full-time member of staff – the Show Secretary, the rest of the work being performed by a large group of volunteers. Edwina herself being heavily involved in the organisation and running of the WI exhibition tent – in 2012 she was chosen as the Patroness of the Show in recognition of all her work over the years. This year when we visit the show we will all be much more aware of all the effort that has gone in over the preceding months to get the WI Marquee so immaculately organised, in particular the effort involved to get all the WI exhibits set out and judged on the Monday prior to the Tuesday opening.
Our next meeting will be on February 7th at 7.30pm in Lower Peover School, when the talk will be by Dr Diana Leitch and entitled “The Science of Chocolate/Catalyst” and anyone interested in joining us is welcome to attend.
We have several additional activities ongoing, including our regular book group on the second Monday of each month, a small group already planning our joint venture for the Cheshire Show and several ideas for walks and days out in the pipeline.
