Lower Peover WI – July 2018

August 26th, 2018 | Posted by Administrator in Events | News | WI News - (Comments Off on Lower Peover WI – July 2018)

Tuesday 3rd July 2018

Our July meeting was a garden meeting held in the beautiful garden of one of our members. We all had a wonderful time – eating great food provided by all the members, drinking prosecco, chatting and enjoying the wonderful weather. There was also a display of all the member’s entries for the Cheshire Show. Although we are a comparatively small WI, we had great success with our entries this year. Lower Peover won the Middlewich Cup awarded for presentation and interpretation in the group entry. The theme was Land, Sea and Sky, and our combined craft and cookery exhibit celebrating the role of women in the army, navy and air force in the First World War, also received many compliments from the visiting public. Several of our individual entries were given second prize or commendations and one of our members won a first and best in class.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday August 1st at 7.30pm in Lower Peover School, when the speaker will be Alf Hughes and the talk “Victorian Portraits”, and we invite anyone who may be interested to come and join us.

Wednesday 6th June 2018

The Guest Speaker this evening was Josephine Gosling, who gave us a talk entitled “Amazing Walks”. Josephine and her husband are keen walkers and over the years have walked in Europe, USA, Africa and Australia and of course extensively in the UK. She encouraged the walkers amongst us to research each walk before the start, particularly to seek out any historical monuments or places we might pass through en route. She illustrated the benefit of this information with a series of interesting photographs and historical facts about many of the walks they have undertaken over the years. The July meeting be a garden meeting held in the garden of one of our members.
Our next Wednesday meeting will be on Wednesday August 1st at 7.30pm in Lower Peover School, when the speaker will be Alf Hughes and the talk “Victorian Portraits”, and we invite anyone who may be interested to come and join us.

Wednesday 2nd May 2018

There was no guest speaker this month as the meeting was concerned with arrangements for future meetings and outings. Several outings have been arranged for 2018, including – The Terracotta Warriors in September, Arighi Bianchi in October, and Bents Garden Centre November/December. Members were asked to vote for speakers and topics to be discussed at future meetings, and ideas were requested for fund raising to enable booking of more expensive speakers. The venue for the garden meeting in July was also agreed. The rest of the evening was passed very enjoyably with several rounds of indoor bowling, tea and biscuits and a raffle.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday June 6th at 7.30pm in Lower Peover School, when the speaker will be Josephine Gosling and the talk “Amazing Walks”, and we invite anyone who may be interested to come and join us.

Lower Peover WI- April 2018

August 26th, 2018 | Posted by Administrator in Events | News | WI News - (Comments Off on Lower Peover WI- April 2018)

Wednesday 4th April 2018

Our guest speakers this month were Graeme and Naomi Simister, volunteer Ambassadors for The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust in Cheshire. The main purpose of the Trust is to give disadvantaged, disabled and terminally ill children a 5 day holiday of a lifetime in an exciting and magical environment, where disability knows no barriers. They described how the Trust, which was started in 1985, has developed over the years. The original farm premises have been renovated and today can provide accommodation for up to 28 children (though this is usually less as carers need to be accommodated as well). In addition there are two flats that can accommodate whole families if required. The outside facilities include adventure playgrounds, farm animals, an aviary and even a pirate ship in the woods, whilst indoors there are art and music rooms, a sensory suite, and cinema. The talk was illustrated with an informative DVD showing children of all abilities thoroughly enjoying themselves on what in some cases is their first ever holiday and in some sadly their last. In addition to the holidays the Trust now holds Christmas parties every year in order to accommodate even more children. The provision of these programmes obviously comes at a cost and fundraising is continuously required, but they are supported by several well-known celebrities and local volunteers and we are sure that inspiring talks such as this will raise more awareness of, and support for, this wonderful unique local facility.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday May 2nd at 7.30pm in Lower Peover School, when there will be a quiz and indoor bowling, and we invite anyone who may be interested to come and join us.

Wednesday 1st August 2018

Following a late cancellation, our Events Organiser, Nerys did a wonderful job finding a speaker for us at VERY short notice. She really hit a pot of gold. Eric Newton came to talk about the quite amazing and interesting life he had led. He described how he had taught himself to play the clarinet by ear, and subsequently became a Busker. Playing while running marathons too! He was so amusing and everyone was fascinated. The poor man was then dragged off to judge the China competition, a subject he had no knowledge about at all, but good heartedly joined in and chose the winners.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday September 5th at 7.30pm in Lower Peover School, when the speaker will be Phillip Powell and the talk is entitled “What is art and who decides what is good art?”, and we invite anyone who may be interested to come and join us.

Lower Peover WI – March 2018

March 8th, 2018 | Posted by Administrator in WI News - (Comments Off on Lower Peover WI – March 2018)

This month our guest speaker was Charlotte Gringras, a writer from Manchester, whose talk was entitled “My novels tell their story”. Charlotte described how she began writing after attending a creative writing course. The subject for her first book was inspired by the discovery that her grandmother had been a suffragette, and even her children did not find out until after her death. Charlotte explained the importance of factual research even if the story itself is fiction. “The Purple Rose”, her first book, gives historically correct details of the history of the suffragette movement although the characters are fictional. She has written two books to date “The Purple Rose” and “Not in our Hands” and also writes poetry and short stories. She explained that good writing does not just need a good story but the ability to make sure that the story flowed keeping the reader’s interest, giving us some examples by reading short extracts from both of her books. Following her talk Charlotte was kind enough to judge our mini writing competition.
Our tea and biscuit session was also enhanced by a cake and jam tasting to help decide, by popular vote, upon our potential entries for the Cheshire Show.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday April 4th at 7.30pm in Lower Peover School, when the talk will be by Rob Bashforth of The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust and we are happy to welcome anyone who may be interested in joining us.
Our regular book group continues to meet on the second Monday of each month, and plans for trips to the cinema, Terracotta Warriors and Arighi Bianchi are in the pipeline
